On Thursday 14 September a small notice was in The South Australian Advertiser on p2.

36 members of the 2 Associations were present.

Mr Oliphant proposed. Mr Lindo seconded that in the interest of junior cricket, it is desirable to amalgamate the cosmopolitan and metropolitan associations. It was carried unanimously.

Junior cricket to us means U 18, U17 etc but in those times South Australian Cricketing Association was regarded as the Senior Association and all the other Associations in Adelaide and the country were junior Associations.

After electing Patron, President, 10 vice Presidents and a Secretary 24 rules were  passed.

1 That this association be named the Adelaide and Suburban Cricketing Association. In the years before others had thought of this name for a competition but if they got started they didn’t last.

2 The object of the association is the improvement of cricket and the promotion of good fellowship between the affiliated clubs.

Rule 4 the  association shall consist of not more than 8 clubs, each club to pay an entrance fee of 10 shillings and six pence, to be forwarded, with application for admission and an annual subscription of 10 shillings and sixpence. To be forwarded to the secretary at least one week before the date of the first match.

Rule 22 The Color of the Association will be Light Blue. (American spelling of color.)

A few years later the colours were black and white. Nothing in the minutes says why.

Around 1945 the colours became Turquoise Blue and Brown. I can’t find that change in the minutes or any explanation. 2 notes of interest. It is the colours of Kenilworth Football Club that now play at what was Panther Park in St Marys. Also it was the colour of the 2nd 43rd battalion formed in South Australia for the 2nd world war and served in North Africa and New Guinea and Borneo.

The first eight clubs were Bowden,  Engineer in Chief. Fitzroy, Middlesex, Prospect, South Suburban, South United and Wallaby.

All matches were to be played on coconut or string matting with a minimum width of 4 feet 6 inches (1.37 metres.) All matches would be 1 innings and would be played out. That is the game lasted until both teams had been bowled out or there was a winner. When you won or lost your match you would go to the ground for the next match and find the team waiting for you or wait there for them to finish their match.

There were enough teams for a Section 2 in 1911. The first world war saw S2 pause from 1916 until 1930. The 2nd world war saw S2 pause for just 2 years 1942 to 1944. S1 persisted through both wars. S3 began in 1936 just to miss 6 years due to the war.

From 1947 Adelaide and Suburban grew from 4 Sections to 7 in 1978 with 84 teams. 12 teams in each section.

Over the years we have seen several similar Associations fold. Independent Central, Southern and SA Churches and Community.

Last season we had 76 teams. Now generally 8 teams in each of 9 sections playing 7 1 day games and 7 2day games with 2 weekends of finals to use 23 weekends each Summer.

Our Constitution still says our Objects are:-

(a)      The encouragement and improvement of the game of Cricket.

(b)      The management and control of matches both between affiliated Clubs and against teams representing other registered Associations.

(c)      The promotion of good fellowship between affiliated Clubs.

(d)      The settlement of all matters and disputes that may arise in matches or between affiliated Clubs.
